Hypto was a mobile-first hyperlocal platform designed for the offline retail segment. Users could purchase their daily essentials through the app and earn discount and loyalty coupons from neighborhood shops.
The core idea was to bridge the gap between local brick-and-mortar retailers and the digital convenience that consumers had come to expect from ecommerce — without requiring shopkeepers to overhaul their existing operations.
On the consumer side, the app surfaced nearby deals and personalized offers based on purchase history and location. Users built up loyalty rewards over time, incentivizing repeat visits to their local stores.
On the merchant side, retailers gained access to rich analytics about their customer base — purchase patterns, visit frequency, peak hours, and basket composition — that were previously only available to large retail chains. Shop owners could create hyper-targeted offers for specific customer segments, such as lapsed buyers or high-value regulars, turning generic promotions into precision marketing.
The backend was built on Django with PostgreSQL as the primary data store. PostGIS powered all the geospatial queries — finding nearby shops, calculating delivery radii, and enabling location-aware coupon targeting.
Elasticsearch handled the product search and discovery layer, providing fast full-text search across catalogs from multiple local retailers. The architecture was designed to scale horizontally, with clear separation between the catalog, geolocation, and analytics services.
